Shelton's daughter, Ann Prather and Ellsberry-says- John VanSandt, son of
Elisha Vansandt, married Nancy Northcutt, daughter of Benjamin and Jane
Armstrong. Lived in Hamilton Co., Ohio. John, a man of strong mind, well
informed, a devoted Christian and the most uncompromising abolitionist. His
house was on the Underground Railroad from Ky. to Canada and a hiding and
feeding place for slaves fleeing to freedom. He is the model for "John
Vancott" (Von trump) in "uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Several owners and
losers of slaves in Ky. brought suit for their loses and he gave up a valuable
farm to pay them.
