Freeman Evans: The earliest record we have of our ancestor, Joseph Bullard, is
his signature on the Watauga Petition, July 1776. Evidently he stayed in this
area for some time as we find him on the tax lists for Washington Co.,
Tennessee, from 1778 to 1781. Then, on August 23, 1784 as a representative from
Greene County, Tennessee, he attended a meeting to form the new State of
Franklin. In 1778 Capt. Joseph Bullard was killed during a battle on Lookout Mountain as he led his troops against
the Chickamauga, Indians. After this battle when the Indians found the body of
Capt. Joseph Bullard, there was much rejoicing because they thought they had
killed Gen. John Sevier. Historians record Joseph Bullard strongly resembled
John Sevier, who was reputed to have been the most handsome man on the
frontier. He was tall and slender, fair with blue eyes and brown hair, and with
an erect military carriage and commanding presence. This interesting story
gives the only description we have of Joseph Bullard.
Notes for MARTHA:

Ref: Joseph Bullard article
by Vella Freeman Evans, great grandaughter of Jeremiah Anderson Clanton. After
Joseph's death, apparently Martha moved to Jefferson County, Tennessee. Many
court records in that County, beginning 1791 through December 1810 show Martha
and her three sons disposed of numerous parcels of land which Joseph had
acquired. No record of her death has been found. Joseph and Isaac Bullard are
found throughout the Court Records of Washington County, and in the February
Sessions, 1799, is a listing of Joseph Bullard's action on the estate of Isaac
Bullard, indicatiog Isaac had died.

Notes for JOHN BULLARD:

1]Reference: article by
Velma Freeman Evans, great grandaughter of Jeremiah Anderson Clanton. John evidently settled in Claiborne Co.,
Tennessee, and on the third Monday in April, 1810, the circuit court was
organised and John Bullard was appointed a commisioner to locate the seat of
justice and lay off a town to be known as Tazewell. The date of John's
birth is unknown; but at the time of his
death in 1834 he left a wife, Nancy, and twelve children. All were named in his
will which is on record in Claiborne Co., Tennessee. Family tradition states
John Bullard's wife Nancy, was the daughter of Lewis Boyer; but this has not
been documented.

Land records of the
Hiwassee District show Henry Bullard's purchase of acreage on Mouse Creek was
in 1820. The Hiwassee Purchase of land from the U.S. Government was made in
1819. Henry Bullard's first grant there is No. 382 for 160 acres, bought in
1820. See Book 1, p. 336, in Land Records Section, state Archives, Nashville,
Tenn. This grant is described as the SW quarter of Sec. 2, Township 5, Range 3
West.
2] Prior to living in
McMinn Co., lived for ten years in Grainger Co., Tennessee.
3] January 20, 1831 sold
land to John M.C. Weir : in Hiwassee District....in sec. 11, Tract Township
containing 320 acres, which tract of land together with hereditaments and
appurtainances thereto belonging ...the said Henry Bullard for himself and his
heirs (does convey) to the said John M.C. Weir----(Signed on above date by
Henry Bullard). Wit: Nat, Smith and David Weir. Proved in court on 28 Mar.
1831, by the witnesses. (Deed Record Book B., p. 146, at the office of the
Count Recorder, Athens, Tenn.) ( Since the witnesses "proved" the
deed in court, one could assume that Henry Bullard was gone by 28 Mar., 1831,
as the grantor usually proved the deed, A.L.V.)
4]see 1840 Cherokee Co.,
Alabama census.
5] In 1844, a struggle over
the location of the permanent county seat of Cherokee County resulted in
election to settle the matter. Henry Bullard was one of three election
commissioners who reported on the town of Centre as a proposed location. This
indicates the probability that Henry was a well-known land owner and also that
he must have lived near Centre, the location of which is given as "on the
old Georgia road, one mile from Garrett's Ferry, and in Township 10, Range 9E
in the Coosa Land District." (Stewart, Cherokee County History, p. 183).
6]Velma Freeman Evans:
Sometime in the late 1840's, a wagon train of pioneers left Alabama and North
Carolina going West, and several members of the Bullard family joined them
including three children of John Bullard, Sr.. The land records of Newton Co.,
Missouri show John Bullard, Jr. and his wife Permelia, Henry Bullard and his
wife Leah, and Elizabeth Bullard Mc Mahon settled there in 1848.
