Notes for JOSEPH ANTONIO WILLIE COMPAGNA:
The settlement of Lakeside
was primary French speaking and relied on a Cotton Mill for employment. The first eight children of Joseph and Marie
Campagna were born and babtised in St. Anthony's Catholic Church in
Lakeside. The decision was made on May
20, 1917to move from Lakeside to Morrisville, Vermont. They moved by way of the St. Johnsbury and
Lake Champlain Railroad. WWI was still
going on at this time and they had to take shelter with neighbors until a small
farm became available for them.
Willie became a naturalized
citizen of the United States on March 1, 1928 by certificate of the US District
Court in Burlington, Vermont at the age of 41.
The first Campagna's arrived in North America at Orleans's Island, a few
miles from Quebec over 150 years before.
Mathias Campagna from LaRochelle, France saidled on the ship
"Noir-de Hollande" and reached Quebec on the 24th of May 1664 with
younger brother Pierre Campagna.
